An interview with Erin from Cloudy Kitchen
Erin, from the deliciously dangerous food blog Cloudy Kitchen, is a New Zealander currently baking her way through life while living in Brooklyn, New York.
Her blog is a mixture of recipes that merge classic US desserts with a unique Kiwi spin. We asked Erin a few questions about her life in NYC, the daily mantra she lives by and of course, what her favourite flavour of F&F nut butter is!
When did you move to Brooklyn and why?
I moved in 2014, to be with my then boyfriend, now husband! We met in Wellington two months before he moved to nyc to do his master's degree here, and I moved over two years later when I was sick of long distance / ready for a change!
Geologist to baker- how on 'earth' did that happen?
I worked on an oil rig in Taranaki before I moved over here, then when I moved we started our design business soon after. I needed something to help with the homesickness, and so I started making recipes from home. People started asking for recipes, and it kind of just went from there! It's been a wild ride but I am so grateful that I get to do this as my job!
What is your favourite thing to bake and why?
That's a hard one! I think I would have to say cookies. I love how they can be easy but super complex all at the same time. I love making a whole bunch of things but I really can't go past cookies. Honourable mention to pie too - I learnt to make pie after I moved here and I can't wait to make so many pies for everyone once we move home!
What is one piece of advice/ mantra/ daily habit that you live by?
Right now, it's literally just taking one day at a time. It's been a really rough year so far, particularly in New York where we got absolutely slammed by Covid. It was really scary for a while, so you really learn to just focus on taking each day as it comes, and being really grateful for everything that happens.
What is your favourite F&F nut butter and way to use it?
I LOVE the Chocolate Hazelnut Butter for eating, but I love to bake with the Dark Chocolate peanut butter! I popped it into some cookies a while back for a stuffed cookie situation, and they were SO GOOD.
